SAFE’s shelter program is provided to those who are fleeing an abusive situation and are in need of a safe place to stay while working towards a life free from violence for themselves and their children.
Domestic Violence Defined
Domestic Violence is a pattern of abusive behavior that is used by one partner in any relationship to gain or maintain power and control over their intimate partner.
• Physical Abuse: Hitting, slapping, grabbing, pinching, biting, hair-pulling, denying medical care, or forcing alcohol/drug use. |
• Sexual Assault: Forcing sexual contact without consent including marital rape, forcing sex after physical violence or treating one in a sexually demeaning manner. |
• Emotional Abuse: Damaging sense of self-worth. This may include constant criticism, name-calling, or damaging one’s relationship with his/her children. |
• Economic Abuse: Making a person financially dependent by maintaining control over financial resources, withholding access to money, or forbidding school or employment |
• Psychological Abuse: Causing fear by intimidation; threatening physical harm to self, or others, harm to pets and property; and forcing isolation from family, friends or school and/or work. |
